Edwin Wiley letter, circa 1906-1908.

Edwin Wiley at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., writes to Dr. John Bell Henneman at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., requesting a photograph of the library at the University of the South and describing his research into southern libraries during the colonial period. His study was published as "Southern Libraries" in volume 7 of The South in the Building of the Nation (Richmond, Va.: Southern Historical Publication Society, 1909).

Edwin Wiley was born at Coal Creek, Tenn., and educated at the University of Tennessee and George Washington University, receiving a Ph.D. degree from the latter in 1911. He married Garnet Noel of Nashville, Tenn., in 1902. He worked as a librarian at the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, the Library of Congress, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Peoria Public Library.
